If Church Point is starting to feel easy for you then try this ride.
You should be fit, skilled on fast bumpy down-hills and competent to fix minor breakdowns.
This ride uses roads which are narrow and not marked with cycle lanes and you should be competent with traffic passing nearby.
From our start point we head to St Ives for a pick up point in the car park near Stanley Street. Check with the ride leader for possible pick up options.
We quickly move along Mona Vale Rd to Terrey Hills and then descend McCarrs Ck Rd until the West Head Rd takes us to the left. The first 2km climb brings us out onto the undulating ridge which we follow for 11km. We climb ''the Wall'' (you will know when you reach it) and then descend quickly until a sharp and tightening right hander demands braking right at the end.
The highlight is the view from the West Head lookout where we stop for a few minutes. Time to consume some snacks from your pocket for an energy burst before the hills to come. Returning along the ridge we then descend to the Akuna Bay Marina where we stop for coffee. Climbing up the steep way back to Terrey Hills is followed by the easier run along Mona Vale Rd.
We usually ride 2x2 to shelter from the head wind and relax and chat.
This ride is suitable for strong riders on road bikes or lighter flat bar bikes setup for fast road travelling. Two water bottles and snacks are compulsory.
