Rides Progression

One of the challenges in the grading of rides is that each ride is different. There can be much debate generated as different riders have different capabilities, riders bring various bikes and attitudes to rides. Grading is influenced by:

  • Distance
  • Ride pace
  • Ride profile (flat vs. hills)
  • Path surface quality
  • Tyre smoothness and pressure
  • Bike type and set-up
  • Climatic conditions (wind, rain, heat, chill)
  • Personal health and capability (physical and mental)
  • Inclination on the day
  • Number of rest/re-group stops

The Rides Coordinator and the Rides Committee does from time to time review the grading of Bike North rides to ensure consistency across the programme. The purpose here is to provide more information about our rides to help you choose the best one for you. The table below provides information on aspects of Bike North's rides with the aim of providing a development progression for those wanting to upgrade their riding skills and capabilities. This is not a definitive list of all Bike North rides; rather it is an intuitive guide based on our most frequently run rides.

Please contact the Rides Coordinator if you have any further questions.

How to read this table:

Speed:

  1. slow means less than 15km/hr average, suitable for beginners
  2. relaxed means a relaxed pace of 15-18 km/hr
  3. medium means 20-23 km/hr
  4. fast means greater than 23 km/hr and is most suited to road bikers. Typically long sections of these rides are run at averages greater than 25km/hr.

Hills & Climbs:

  1. Blank means the ride is fairly flat
  2. means some short but steeper pinches
  3. means some longer steady climbs or steep pinches on an undulating route
  4. means several long and steady climbs throughout the ride
