The Hon. Patrick (Carl) Scully, B.A., LL.B.(Hons), M.P. Dear Sir, When I first heard about the idea of using the railway easement land to build a cycleway on the North Shore I thought it brilliant. It's so obvious, for where else can you build a continuous, safe, gentle graded cycleway in Northern Sydney's rugged terrain. A cycleway that connects so many schools, Institutes of TAFE and university campuses, commercial centres and hospitals. Where else can you create the backbone to an integrated network of cycleways crisscrossing Northern Sydney? Where else can you provide a cycleway that links both the commercial heart of the city and the Olympic site to Hornsby, our northern gateway. While I chose to become an active member of the Rail Trail Team, first and foremost I am a Rail Trail Supporter expressing my wholehearted commitment to this proposed cycleway. A cycleway that is needed now, not in ten years; a cycleway that must be complete not fragmented; must be thoughtfully designed for safe, easy, accessible and convenient riding not just a good enough path for cyclists. This cycleway is needed now to allow our children to cycle safely to school for the sake of their own good health. To help them develop life time habits of healthy exercise and to give them independence, releasing them and their parents from their chains to the motor car. BikePlan 2010 will be too late for our children. Only by providing safe, accessible, easy grade cycleways can we encourage large numbers of people to leave their cars at home and cycle locally. Only on a long continuous cycleway can they gradually push out those boundaries and replace so many of motor vehicle trips with the far cleaner, greener vehicle, their bicycle. I urge you to commence detailed engineering plans for the entire length of a high quality, continuous, safe, gentle grade cycleway along the North Shore and Main Northern Lines, as an immediate priority. Design a cycleway utilising the railway corridor wherever possible. This cycleway must connect the City and the Olympic Site to the commencement of the bicycle lane along the Pacific Highway north of Asquith. I urge you to then complete the building of this cycleway within the term of your government. Yours truly, Carolyn New |
