New Cycle Bridge

This brand new bridge has has been constructed for the cycleway to cross Cabramatta Creek at the southern end of Broomfield Road.

The bridge is about 3 metres wide between the railings and the single bollard is centrally placed. This is an excellent new facility .......BUT.....

Bridge is Flood Prone

This bridge has been built to cross of creek, which is clearly often flooded. The most recent flooding occurred just days before the opening of the cycleroute. The bridge is low and quite clearly was inundated. Days after rain the water level was still quite high

AND .....

Debris and Mud on Cycle Bridge

This flooding has left vegetation debris over the bridge and mud on the cycleway. This is an obstacle and dangerous for cyclists as well as requiring regular maintenance by the local authorities

THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED ....

Adjacent Railway Viaduct

Look to the left of the photo. The railway crosses the same creek high up, well above the flood area.

Why couldn't we use that existing structure. just add a lightweight steel bike track clipped on the side.

Wait a minute, aren't they building something up there ? ....

Alternative Cycle Route Along Railway

YES, it is nearly finished now. A walkway has already been built along the railway line, presumably for railway workers.

This is narrow but there is no reason a slightly wider structure couldn't have been built. If it is not wide enough for the railway workers then build a second one for them on the other side. Or add a fence for separation. We need visionary solutions to building great cycle facilities in Sydney.
