Over the past two years members of the Bike North’s Ryde/Hunters Hill Workgroup have been identifying bollards on shared paths that add extra risk by not being visibly prominent. As obstacles in the middle of paths, bollards are hazardous enough, those that are harder to notice add extra risk e.g. white bollard against a white path, or a dark green post on a deeply shaded path. The Cycling Aspects of Austroads Guides (2017 Edition) sets out the recommend design of bollard on paths.
Thanks particularly to Alf and other Bike North members for getting the approximately 20 problem bollards listed on the small project work list of the Bicycle Advisory Committee of Ryde Council. Bike North acknowledge the work of Ryde Council staff in replacing or repainting all the identified bollards.
