Who is Freedom Wheels? I suspect that, like me, most members of Bike North have not been aware of Freedom Wheels. With the help of teams of volunteers Freedom Wheels gives people with a disability the chance and – for many – the thrill of getting on a bike and going cycling. Something we take it for granted. Freedom Wheels is the fundraising partner of Spring Cycle. Have a look at http://springcycle.com.au/fundraising/ and https://freedomwheels.org.au/ for more info. Even with volunteer labour It costs about $2,000 to build a bicycle especially designed to cater for a person’s disabilities. NDIS provides some funding but it is not enough.
To date we, as an organisation, have largely tended to look after our own members: exceptions would be some of our advocacy work, our coaching programs and a recent community ride in Rhodes. Your Bike North Executive has been looking for an opportunity to do more and we have been in touch with Freedom Wheels to see how we might help.
Your Executive has decided to encourage members of Bike North to donate to Freedom Wheels and the Executive will match donations made by individual members dollar for dollar. We have in mind two ways for members to donate:
- For those attending Cowra at Easter: We will have a donation box available at the wine and cheese event o the Saturday afternoon. Please bring your cash donation with you!
- For those not attending Cowra: Please email our Treasurer (firstname.lastname@example.org) and he will advise you how to donate.
You will be supporting kids with disabilities who otherwise may not have the opportunity to get on a bike. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY.
