From the start, I was riding the streets as a kid on a dragster & a BMX, before owning a (then) new-breed "hybrid" mountain bike at uni. During stints living overseas in New Zealand and the UK, I was also unable to resist owning some form of 2-wheeled travel: in NZ, it was for cycling down to town for groceries or out to the beach. In the UK, I experienced cycling on rail trails and around the Nationals Parks of Northern Wales. In 2004, I really (finally) got a bit more seriously into road cycling with a Gitane entry-level bike, but soon upgraded to a Giant TCR C1. This made road cycling longer distances more comfortable & easier. Joining Bike North's medium-hard rides were rewarding experiences but the morning tea breaks were always welcome!

18mths ago, it wasn't enough excitement to go fast, so along came the Trek 6500 hardtail mountain bike & off-road exploring started, and increased my love of the bush and the great outdoors. Recently, the acquisition of a Specialised Safire FSR Expert dual suspension bike has upped the ante again, almost making a lounge-chair ride out of some of the more challenging singletracks around!!

I've always been interested in encouraging others to get fit (cycling being only one of the many sports I participate in) and believe that you can't really go wrong with the pedalling variety. Low cost, environmentally-friendly, and allowing the freedom, exercise, variety and distances that other activities don't always deliver. Bike North's fundamentals are similar, with a great core group of volunteers who encourage & assist in all aspects of cycling, as well as being a great bunch of people with varied experiences.

I look forward to seeing more people, young and old, join the Cycling Revolution!
