Winter Cycling

"It's too cold to ride in Winter". This is something you ofter hear from cyclists who hibernate for Winter, but in Sydney, it really isn't that bad.
In some European countries, snow and ice don't stop regular commuters from getting the bike out daily and pedalling off on their daily routine. Even in Canberra, with sub-zero early morning temperatures, cycling is a year-round activity.
It has often been said that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. And that applies to cycling in Winter. With the right clothing, you can still enjoy a Bike North ride and the coffee at the halfway mark seems even better.
The key to correct clothing is to layer. Start with a base layer. Personally, I use a merino singlet, which is light, breathes well and wicks away any moisture. This is followed by my Bike North jersey and is completed with a good quality jacket, which keeps the wind out and is breathable.
Your extremities, ie fingers and toes, seem to suffer the most from cold weather. Full finger gloves and a decent pair of socks will assist.
When selecting your clothing, don't rug up too much. Riding will generate heat so too much clothing can become a burden, as it is difficult to pack away. You should be cool at the start but comfortable by about one-third of the ride distance.
Often Winter is more overcast so visibility is not good. Bright clothing assists, as does the use of lights. Review Bike North's article, "Lights, Camera, Action" in the April edition of Chain Reaction and in the Skills and Safety section of our website.
Winter also presents other challenges. With reduced evaporation, roads can often be wet. For as little as $10 you can purchase a lightweight, rear mudguard, which easily fits to your bike.
The lack of evaporation can also mean that corners are possible wet and present a greater hazard than Summer. In July, Bike North is emphasising Safe Cornering. Use of techniques details in the 1st July Chain Reaction and in the Skills and Safety section of our website, will help keep you safe and your ride will become more enjoyable.
Throughout Winter, Bike North will continue to list over 40 rides per month. There are plenty of opportunities to get out of the germ ridden indoors and enjoy a ride with other Bike North members.
