Hot Rides are Happening!

Well it is summer and Sydney is giving us the humidity and heat to prove it! But that doesn't stop our cycling stalwarts.
Last Friday Roger Pottie led the Mirambeena Magic Ride. The description on the Calendar starts with - "Head west along the PVC, the M4 cycleway (under M4) then the Liverpool Rail Trail to Canley Vale to visit the picturesque lakes of Mirambeena Regional Park at Lansdowne."
If you read on it says "In summer the ride can be very hot"!
Yep - it was . . .  as you can see in the photos. Well done team AND Roger!

Thanking Big Rides Day Ride Leaders

I feel terrible!
At the recent Big Rides Day, when we were thanking the Ride Leaders I used an inaccurate list and missed some people.  The actual Ride Leaders involved were: Mark Hooper, Chris Stock, Olivia Fabbro, Bruce Wilson, Brian Lynne, David Thomson, Martin Gelato Fairy Bowesman, Geoff Young, John Williams and myself.

Thank you all so much for helping make the day the success it was!  You really put the Rides into Big Ride Day!

It is very important to me that we thank our people properly and I feel very bad that I was clearly using an inaccurate list.

I send my sincere apologies to Mark, Chris, Olivia and Bruce for this mix-up.

How Many Metres Will/Did We Climb?

There is no “correct” answer! The tool we use for plotting our Ride Routes, RidewithGPS (“RwGPS”) explains some complexities here.

A recommendation there advises to always use the same tool, as that will at least give relativity: a Ride with a higher metres-climbed will feel like more climbing than a Ride with fewer metres-climbed. Bike North’s library of Routes are all generated with the same tool.

Even then, there’s scope for a “feel” contradiction. Our 53km Ride “Katoomba to Emu Plains” supposedly has 211M of climbing, which might surprise for this overall descent. But after the initial climb past Leura shops, most of the remaining 95M of “climbing” is in “big dippers”, with momentum from a dip minimizing climb effort on the shorter upside.

Greenwich Point Wharf

In case you haven't heard, for those using the Greenwich Point Wharf, the main of the wharf upgrade is complete and the ferry service will recommence this Friday 13 December.  The new lift access will be completed early in 2025.
This ferry service is well used by cyclists and features in a number of Bike North rides for inner harbour access. Bike North Advocacy and members participated in the consultation process which resulted in successful retention of bike ramp access and other improvements such as the weather protected waiting area.
