Chain Reaction needs a new Editor

Sadly, our current Editor, Di Lawrence, needs to step back from the wonderful contribution she has been making all this time, publishing Chain Reaction each week.  We now need someone – or perhaps a few people – to take on the role of Editor.

Our members love Chain Reaction.  Through it we share our passion for cycling, give ideas for exotic places to ride, hear the latest news about Bike North and cycling generally, and keep informed about changes – and threats – to our cycle paths and routes.  Above all, it helps us see who we are: a welcoming group of people enjoying life in the saddle, powered by volunteers who give freely of their time for the benefit of each other.

It is hard to imagine Bike North without our weekly emailed newsletter.

So, would you like to become our new Editor?  Or do you know of another Bike North member who would be suitable?  Of course, we would show you how it all works and train you in the various steps involved.  Di is very keen to share with you the tricks and shortcuts she has developed and discovered, which streamline the process.

What makes a good Editor?

  • Able to develop confidence using the ClubExpress publishing process: we would teach you how to use it and help as you build experience and confidence
  • An eye for detail and design: the articles need close proof-reading for spelling and grammar
  • Able to help communicate messages: knowing what people need to hear and how to say it well
  • Willingness to publish on time every week: until now we have published every Wednesday and we would be happy to negotiate a weekly deadline that works well for you.

The Editor is an important part of the Comms Team, which includes the Communications Coordinator and the Social Media Gurus.  Occasionally that team communicates or meets by Zoom to discuss publishing issues and opportunities as well as the delivery of any specific campaigns that align with strategies developed by the Executive Committee. So you won’t be alone, but part of a small team delivering comms to our members, stakeholders and others.

What is involved?

In brief, these are the main steps in preparing and publishing each issue.  Typically, members send articles to editor@bikenorth.org.au, ideally with an image or two, that makes the article more appealing to readers.  The Editor transfers those articles into the pre-prepared template, adjusts the formatting and proof-reads the text for typos and grammar.  Once the email is complete, the Editor then uses ClubExpress to send it to all our members.  Di says that, with practice, it takes between 3 and 4 hours a week.

Would you like to know more?

If you would like to know about this in more detail, please don’t hesitate to contact Di at editor@bikenorth.org.au.

Di would be very happy to discuss the role with you or feel free to contact me at president@bikenorth.org.au or the Comms Co-ordinator, Sarah Gillis at communications@bikenorth.org.au

Thank you Di!

In next week’s issue of Chain Reaction, we will express our gratitude to Di more thoroughly.  For now, we just say ‘thanks!’  Thanks for your wonderful contribution to the members.  It has been a great journey together and we wish you luck on the next phase of your journey.

Phill Hart, President

WHY YOU SHOULD CYCLE KOREA

South Korea is a dream destination for cycling enthusiasts. My wife and I have toured various countries, but Korea stands out due to its exceptional cycling infrastructure, scenic routes, and warm hospitality. The country boasts a 2,700 km network of bike paths, including the iconic Cross-Country Cycling Road from Seoul to Busan and the picturesque Jeju Island loop. With abundant accommodation options, efficient public transport, and a unique certification system, South Korea offers a seamless and memorable experience for cyclists.

Highlights of our journey include cycling the Gusan Sea Wall, enjoying authentic Korean cuisine, and navigating with local apps like Naver Maps. The kindness of locals and government tourism support further enhanced our adventure.

Bollard Busting????
Last week we mentioned the important work being done by Bike North in conjunction with Bicycle NSW to push for clearer rules for the addition / omission of bollards on shared paths.
We told you that a web page has now been created where BUGs and individuals can record details of bollard incidents called Bollard busting! But our link was Busted!!!
It's all fixed now so . . .  help us strengthen our arguments with TfNSW by providing details of actual bollard incidents!

Help us to achieve change within Transport for NSW’s approach and policies and help make cycling safer for all!

Use this link to report hazardous bollards.

Warringah Freeway Upset

The shared user path alongside the Warringah Freeway between Merrenburn Avenue and Brook Street, Naremburn REMAINS CLOSED and is scheduled to reopen from 5am on Wednesday 12 February 2025.

In the interim, detours are in place.
Transport for NSW’s detour (as per graphic) from the Merrenburn Ave bike path off-ramp includes a steep climb up Marks Ave northbound.

An alternative detour via West Street, Willoughby Road and Atchison Street offers an easier gradient. Refer to the aerial photo view with pink route mapped.

Thanks to Carolyn New for the notification and alternate route.

Bobbin Head Classic stand  Sunday 30 March

Bike North held a successful stand at the Bobbin Head Classic last year (thanks to Brian and the volunteers). During the day we engaged with Bike North members, other cyclists (we even had a few become BN members) Bicycle NSW, local councillors, Mayors and members of Parliament. Given that success, we plan to hold a stand again this year.

If you can spare a couple of hours to help ‘person’ the stall on Sunday 30 March please email Advocacy Co-ordinator David Thomson at advocacy@bikenorth.org.au.  Thank you.

Foodbank NSW & ACT’s Km for Kilos bike ride: 1- 3 May 2025

A Free Lunch …

Bicycle NSW will be conducting Ride Leader Training on Sunday 9 March at Sydney Olympic Park.

To provide a high quality training experience for the ‘students’, BNSW is seeking volunteers to assist in ‘actor’ roles during the day including participating in led rides round Olympic Park.

Volunteers would attend from 7:45am (for an 8am start) until approximately 2pm and BNSW will provide refreshments and lunch.

If willing and able to attend, please email David Martin who is coordinating the day at  martin225D@hotmail.com for details.
