Nights at the Round Table!

On the first Tuesday of every month (except January), the Bike North Committee meets to receive reports of the previous month's activities and discuss issues and actions in line with the annual Strategic Plan.

Last night, the Committee had its first meeting for 2025 and it was certainly a busy one. Matters discussed included:
  • identifying priority actions for the next quarter including new member rides, activating interest groups, establishing new comms channels for members, encouraging member participation within various club activities
  • advocacy updates and outcomes of meetings with state MPs and local members
  • initial planning for the May Big Rides Day on 25 May 2025
  • streamlining club operations both financially and operationally.
The minutes of preceding months' Committee meetings are available for all members to read in the Document Library on our website. Access by either logging in and selecting 'Document Library' from the Membership menu, or just take this link!: Executive Committee Minutes (you will be asked to log in).

Learning to Ride

Bike North does two main things.  One of them is: ' provide members and others with safe and enjoyable cycling experiences’.  (You get extra points if you know the other thing we do!).

Peter Green and his team of assistants recently helped a new generation of cyclists, by running Ryde Council’s Learn to Ride program.  (Shout out to Sam, Alex and Karen!). I had the privilege of helping on this day and I have to say, I had loads of fun.

We had marked out a route of obstacles and chalked instructions (see the photos) and helped the kids build skills and confidence working their way through that.

Then, we took them on a long, meandering tour, first of the Meadowbank netball courts and then along one of the lesser-used paths nearby. Meanwhile, a couple of us worked with kids who actually learned to ride, by themselves, for the first time!

It was great fun, with supportive and grateful parents.

If you'd like to be part of this - probably next school holidays - please drop me a line.

Not Your Typical Wednesday!

For those lucky enough to be able to escape work mid-week  - and for those who have managed that on a permanent basis! - Bike North offers atypical adventures!

Take next Wednesday (12 February) as an example where we have an off-road ride along the Oaks Trail in the lower Blue Mountains scheduled. Some initial uphill 'work' is rewarded by 20km of steady descent, surrounded by tall trees, greenery and the smell of the bush. Check it out here .

Or this Sunday (9 February), a closer-to-home and perhaps easier alternative, is offered on the Perimeter and Long Trails at Terrey Hills. 21km of wide trails with just a few challenging ascents and descents which can always be walked.

Whether off-road is your thing, or you prefer art or history, or just a long steady ride, our calendar offers all possibilities!

Why not join in the fun?!

Gore Blimey!

Great news:  the narrow pathway from Naremburn to Brook St is being widened.  This section has been a concern for some time, with riders squeezed close to the speeding freeway traffic.  The new widened section, with improved fencing, is a big step forward.  It has been a slog trying to get TfNSW to make any improvements on this project, so this is a welcome development.
