Spring Cycle Events - Bike North 2025

Spring is traditionally the season for large participation cycling events such as:-

1. Bicycle NSW Spring Challenge
2. The Bowral Classic, and the
3. MS Gong Ride.

However, many of our members have never participated. What is available and why be part of such an event?

Being part of a mass cycling event is a real buzz with so many like-minded individuals participating. Courses are generally closed to traffic with cyclists having access to some great courses. Having a goal to train towards can also be a great motivator and Bike North rides provide opportunities to increase your fitness, whether you are a “super-cyclist” or just out to enjoy the day.

Bike North will often have registered teams that you can join but that doesn’t mean you all ride as a pack, given differing cycling abilities.

We Activ8'ed!

September saw Bike North get active under our Activ8 program and what a month it was.

The objective of Activ8 is to get members to shake off the Winter blues and get active on a Bike North ride. Whilst we had a week of unfavorable weather, we still had lots of dry days with warmer weather showing that Winter has gone.

Our Ride Leaders have done an exceptional job, listing 66 rides for the month, so there was lots of variety, from easy rides, such as Concord for Cake, through to Three Gorges Pies. (Interesting that food is a common theme!) Thanks to all the Ride Leaders for putting on these rides.

Whereas we would normally have around 120 members participate on a Bike North ride in any month, we Activ8'ed 163 participants, many doing more than one ride in the month. It was great to see members getting active after Winter.

Add to this, the Chatswood Street Fair for advocacy and our Big Bike Film Night, and pre-movie dinner, WOW Photography and our Photo Contest, and it definitely was an active month.

But just because Activ8 has concluded for another year, it doesn't mean you go back to the couch. The weather is great and our Ride Leaders have already started listing rides for October.

Let's see lots of Bike North members out being active in the coming months.

Have you been indicating hazards to the other riders in your group?

We would like to remind all riders of the importance of calling or pointing out hazards whilst riding as a group.  When registering for a ride, we all accept the warning as to the risk and agree not to put ourselves or our fellow riders into danger.

Unfortunately, riders are continuing to put themselves and their fellow riders in significant danger by choosing not to call or point out hazards, whether it be a pothole, sticks or a walker on a shared path.

On a recent ride, a ride leader (as sweep) observed on multiple occasions several riders having to swerve at the last instant to avoid a collision with a walker on a shared path because there was no effort by others to call or point out the hazard.  We were extremely lucky to have avoided a collision.

Any incident for any reason can be extremely disruptive, cause significant damage including physical injury, and you could be the one responsible for it.  So please, next time you are out on a group ride, remember to call or point out hazards and keep your fellow riders safe: this in turn will help keep you safe.   We all share that responsibility.

A reminder on Bike North calls can be found in the Document Library.

To view those calls, copy the below address to your browser page, enter, and log in using your Bike North password:-

Note, this also extends to the use of bicycle bells, a legal requirement to have on your bike.
