E-BIKE BAN REVERSED

Following its July proposal for a blanket ban, the NSW Government has announced that most e-bikes are still welcome on trains.  Only DIY kits that convert regular bikes to e-bikes will be banned from Sydney Trains and Metro services, starting from 1st November 2025.

As Minster for Transport John Graham said: “The overwhelming message from the consultation was that banning all e-bikes from trains would go too far. Taking out the highest risk e-bikes is a sensible and balanced step.”

This is a huge win for cyclists, including many Bike North members who take their e-bikes by train.  Congratulations to Bicycle NSW and their lobbying efforts.  Congratulations to all the cyclists who responded to the government's survey.  Bike North also contacted local members of parliament.  Bike North efforts were led by Tom Rubin.

This isn’t the end of the story - Improved and nationally consistent e-bike definitions and regulations are urgently needed in Australia.  Bike North and Bicycle NSW have advocated for the Australian Government to stem the flood of poor quality, over-powered e-bikes and scooters. When member for Mackellar, Dr Sophie Scamps, presented a bill to parliament, which included reinstatement of the EN15194 standard for all e-bikes imported into Australia, this bill was seconded by local MP Nicolette Boele after she had spoken with Bike North's Carolyn New.

Support more walking and cycling in the Road Act

Do you want to see our roads and streets better supporting walking and cycling?

The Road Act 1993 has been under review over the last year and has been recognised as being out of date, particularly in terms of its car centric approach.  The latest Roads Act Review is primarily focussed on complex matters relating to the options in approach for the review but there is a section headlined as For the Broader Community. This does offer an opportunity for those of us interested in what the future of roads and streets could look like to complete a simple survey to tell them that walking and cycling is important to you … and/or other areas of your interest. Survey closes on Friday 31 October. Click here

Canberra in Spring 2025

Cycled in Canberra and want to do it again?, or perhaps your first time and not sure of where to ride? Well, BikeNorth can help - from Monday 3rd November through Sunday 9th November there are a number of rides being organised, across Canberra, North, South, East and West, with distances ranging from 30km to 70km, all at an average pave of 17-19 km/h.

All rides are posted on the BikeNorth calendar and open for registrations.  Come for one day, or come for 7 - entirely up to you.  Dinners will be scheduled (at your own cost), and are entirely optional.   There is a rumour that the Gelato Fairly may be making an appearance after riding around Lake Burley Griffin on Friday 7th November.

If you would like more details, please contact Martin Bowesman on 0431 226 704 to discuss.
