I don’t own a car; I ride a bike as much as I can and wish to do so but my main issue is how much worry I have with dealing with cars and automobiles. When you compare Sydney to another country like The Netherlands you can see a clear difference in culture. The Dutch love their bikes and that is entirely because they have changed the ways they have planned their cities during the 70s.

The best and most immediate way to make cycling more accessible is a strategy we can adopt to change our roads and services over time to encourage more cycling. … Read more

1. What will you do to help advocate for a doubling of the active transport budget, encouraging andsupporting walking and cycling between destinations?

I’m assuming you have done your due diligence to conclude the budget needs to be doubled. I’dcollaborate with the Members of Parliament that adjoin the boundaries of Wahroonga to workthrough the Budget to ensure adequate funding for an Active Transport Strategy. I’d also holdcommunity meetings with Bike North and members of the community that want to get involved withthis important project.I do want to be clear that I do not support cycle and walkways that destroy the critically endangeredecosystems such as remnants of the blue gum high forests. … Read more

Labor will double funding for active transport in the transport budget from $60m over the next 4 years to $120m. Active transport is good for public health, reduces emissions and congestion, improves air quality, and is a cheap alternative for people to get around our city as the cost of tolls and petrol continue to rise. It’s good for the economy, reducing congestion and improving productivity. That’s why Labor has committed to delivering an extra $60m to funding for active transport in the transport budget to support more walking and cycling infrastructure across NSW. … Read more

The NSW Liberal Government appointed the state’s first Minister for Active Transport in 2022 to recognise the importance of rebalancing infrastructure priorities to encourage more walking and cycling. The NSW Government estimates that more than 1.1 billion walking and bike riding trips are taken per year across New South Wales and we want to double this number in 20 years.

Unlike many countries in Europe, we have not included enough cycling infrastructure historically in our local suburbs, thereby making it very difficult and expensive to create them. Most roads are owned and maintained by local councils and in our area there could be more investment by that level of government. … Read more
